Virtual Chat-n-Chew 2020-2021

***NEW THIS YEAR - PTO PROVIDED BOOKS - EVENING MEETINGS VIA ZOOM***

Chat-n-Chew is VPE's book club for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students.  This program provides an opportunity for students of all reading levels to read five grade-appropriate books outside of the classroom and discuss them with their peers.

This year, PTO will be providing new copies of books to the first 50 students who sign up for the program.  These books will be theirs to keep.  After the first 50 participants, students will be responsible for sourcing their own copies of the books, either through your local library or by purchasing through Scholastic/your local bookstore.  In order to reach all VPE students through their chosen mode of learning, meetings will be held via Zoom outside of regular school hours.  Books will be distributed through backpack mail whenever possible, or through driveway drop.  Book titles will be selected throughout the year based on which books Scholastic offers at reduced prices.  As the year progresses, we may be able to access the existing Chat-N-Chew library for students to borrow and return.

Each month, participants will read their books at home, then attend a discussion group with their peers via Zoom with a parent volunteer who facilitates discussion. Students are welcome to make a special snack for the virtual meetings to add to the traditional Chat-n-Chew feel.

Volunteers Needed

We need parent or grandparent volunteers to make this program successful.  As a volunteer, you will be responsible for hosting a Zoom meeting and facilitation discussion among the students.  Because we are virtual, we can be more flexible on scheduling this year.  We recommend that meetings be held during the first full week of the month (dates below).  This is a great year to volunteer if you are otherwise limited on availability during the school day. Because you will be facilitating the discussion, please try to read the book, or at the very least be familiar with basic plot.  PTO will provide you with a list of discussion questions for each book.

Sharing and talking about a common book is a GREAT way to connect with your child and other students here at Valley Park.
